‛Ammār al-Baṣrī
Translation and introductory study by: Maróth Miklós
Orientalia Christiana I.
The book contains the German translation of ʿAmmār al-Baṣrī’s Kitāb al-Burhān (pp. 9–86) and a study that deals with the rhetoric background of the book (pp. 87–171). The Nestorian, ʿAmmār al-Baṣrī, following the tradition of the Greek Church Fathers, presented all his views about the questions of the Christian-Muslim religious discussions during the famous “Baghdad dispute” having resorted to the convincing methods of Greek rhetoric. These methods, through religious discussions, have been integrated into the scientific, mainly theological, literature of Islam.

Ninth-century Arabic Christian Apology and Polemics: A Terminological Study of ‛Ammār al-Baṣrī’s Kitāb al-Masā’il wa-l-Ajwiba

The book demonstrates that ʿAmmār al-Baṣrī, one of the first three known Arabic Christian writers, is a prominent early author who contributed to the transmission of Greek influence on Arabic prose. An examination of the terminology of his work Kitāb al-Masā’il wa-‘l-ajwiba will help us to better understand the evolution of kalām and falsafa terminologies.
