Formal requirements

Books:

For spelling purposes, bibliographic references are to be treated as a sentence, so the rules of ortography as issued by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (the use of full stops, commas, colons, etc.) apply to footnotes. Footnotes should be based on the same principles in Hungarian and foreign language publications.

In bibliographic references, each item should be separated by a comma except for the author and title of the book: in this case, as in the case of a direct quote, a colon should be inserted after the name. A bibliographic item evokes the opinion of the author, it does not reiterate his words but identifies where they can be found. If the title consists of two parts (headline and subtitle), they should be separated by a comma and the full title should be written in italics indicating the full title.

Author(s) (in a family namegiven name order, given names my be shortened to initials), the title should be written in italics after a colon followed by the place of publication (if any: the publisher is written in parentheses), year (if any: in parentheses and the title of the series in italics) and the page numbers. If the work consists of multiple volumes, after the title, the volume must be referred to as in the following example: (vol. I,), i.e. a full stop should be written after the abbreviation vol., the volume number should be written in Roman numerals without a full stop and separated by commas from the continuation.

Monographs:

Rice, M.: The Archaeology of the Arabian Gulf, c. 5000–323 BC, London and New York (Routledge), 1994.
Versteegh, K.: The Arabic Linguistic Tradition, London and New York (Routledge), 1997, (Landmarks in Linguistic Thought III).
Ormos I (or: Ormos István): Egy életút állomásai, Kmosskó Mihály 1876−1931, Budapest, 2017.
Al-Ḏahabī, Moḥammad Ḥusain: al-Tafsīr wa ʼl-mufassirūn, vol. I, al-Qāhira, 1963.

Article in collections of studies:

The author’s name, colon: the title of the study, in: the title of the volume in italics (any subtitles are separated from the headline by a semicolon), after ed. the editor, after eds. without full stops the editors’ names, location, year, (possibly the title of the series in italics) and after a comma the page numbers should be written. You can replace (ed.) or (eds.) with the form ed.

Article in a journal:

Similarly to the collections of volumes, but instead of the title of the volume, that of the journal, the volume number, year and page number should be in italics:
Drake, H. A.: When was the De laudibus Constantini delivered? Historia, 24, 1975, 345–356;
In all cases, abbreviations should consist of the authors’ surnames (while omitting given names), the year of publication and the page numbers.

Rice, 1994, 34–36.
Merlan, 1969, 26.
Drake, 1975, 349–350.

Transliteration:

The transliteration of Arabic words depends on the primary language of the work. In English, the English scheme should be followed, in the case of other languages (French, German, Hungarian), the continental tradition must be adhered to. In quotes, the transcription remains in its original form.

Qurʾān references:

As with Bible references, sūra and verse are separated by commas: Qurʾān 5,33.
