Research

One of the main tasks of the Institute is to educate a new generation of researchers in the fields of Arabic and Iranian studies. It does so offering tenures for postgraduate students, so that they may take their first steps on their chosen field with the assistance of older, more experienced researchers. In addition to the direct tutorial system employed in postgraduate training in Western European universities, the Institute also facilitates the professional development of young researchers by funding their participation in domestic and international conferences as well as foreign research trips. In addition to their research, our researchers are also actively involved in group projects managed by the Institute.

The Institute considers it vital to cover a wide range of disciplines within the fields of Arabic and Iranian studies. Accordingly, young researchers currently employed at the Institute specialize in a diverse range of subjects (Arabic philosophy, history, literature, politics and history of ideologies, law, medicine, Muslim-Christian relations).

Apart from supporting individual researchers, the Institute also aims to help develop higher education in Oriental studies in Hungary as opportunity allows. To this end, the Institute is involved in university courses, writing textbooks, inviting foreign visiting professors and provides scholarships.

The Institute also seeks to promote the latter goal through cooperation agreements with various higher education institutions, e.g. the Faculties of Humanities at ELTE, PPKE as well as the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in Cluj-Napoca.

In order to improve research conditions for its associates and and the Hungarian research community in general, the Institute goes to lengths to procure all relevant text editions on expert literature in the fields of Arabic and Iranian studies. Over the last twenty years, our library has become a vitally important collection for Hungarian experts, with more than 24000 volumes available for study.

To expand support for the younger generation of researchers, the Institute has launched a scholarship programme for university students. Therefore, it awaits the application of students with an outstanding level of knowledge, who are in the final year of their bachelor’s degree or in the first year of their MA master’s degree, whether they’re interested in classical disciplines of Oriental studies or the study of the contemporary Near East. The admission or, in the event of poor performance, dismissal of applicants is decided by a committee based on examination results.
