This volume contains the studies of Miklós Maróth, László Odrobina, Judit Tóth, Ernő Szabó, Annamária R. Facsády, Kornél Szovák, Renáta Skorka, Attila Tuhári, László Takács, László Szilágyi, Laura Menta Szilágyi, Eszter Draskóczy, Norbert Mátyus, Ádám Vér, József Zsolt Gallina, Tamás Vajda and András Vadas.
So far, studies have not or have hardly examined the education, training system and structure of the Ancient Times and the Middle Ages. This volume studies the processes of the acquisition, teaching and practice of manual work, professions and professional activities carried out by free but not aristocratic citizens, foreigners, slaves and freed slaves. It also studies the methods and means of knowledge transfer, therefore, the system of professional training (possibly adult) of the Ancient Times and the Middle Ages.
According to the topics discussed, three major thematic units (Part I —Forms and frameworks of transfer of professional knowledge, Groups of organisations in Ancient Times and the Middle Ages; Part II — Written memories and artefacts, Literary resources as textbooks; Part III — Teaching certain professions, technology, techniques, tradition, innovation and knowledge transfer) demonstrate the systems of training and knowledge transfer activities within the family and framework of the workshop. Most importantly, however, they seek to collect and analyse data on the participants, duration, order/process and costs of training through a variety of research methods. Particular attention is paid to the appearance of specialisation within each profession, the organisation of the conditions of practising the profession, and detection of the history of institutionalisation.
In addition, research into the ancient and medieval history of professional training considers important to identify textbooks, didactic poetry, essays, technical descriptions, manuals, encyclopaedias and other resources of knowledge transfer. It also aims to investigate reasons for the tradition of texts, the criteria for its usability as well as its limitations, and also outline the intentions behind the writing.
