Lecture by Professor Miklós Maróth in Kuwait

Professor Miklós Maróth attended a conference organized by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Kuwait in early December. The conference, organized by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Kuwait, aimed to facilitate intercultural communication and further strengthen the balanced relationship between Arabic-speaking Muslim countries and European states. At the three-day conference, prominent representatives of Orientalism, more precisely of Arab Studies, gathered from Arabic-speaking and European countries. The participants drew up an outline of an action plan aimed to establish a partnership between the Arab world and European Orientalists engaged in it scientifically. The document advocates, among other points, the formulation of professional requirements for Orientalist education with regard to religious traditions and symbols, as well as the establishment of objective research. As part of this cooperation, about 10 conferences are planned to be held partly in Arabic and European locations. In the future, they intend to establish 5 Arabic departments and Arab-based research financed by Kuwait.

The relationship between European and Muslim cultures is strengthened by hosting scholars, coordinating the work of Arab researchers and non-Arab representatives of Orientalism, as well as translating primarily French and German works that scientifically deal with the Muslim world into Arabic. One of the major results of the conference is that the programme will provide smaller countries engaged in Oriental studies with a primary role in the future.

Although no Arabic research is present in the network of research institutes that belong to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungarian Orientalist traditions play a significant role in science in Hungary. Meanwhile, this partnership offers an opportunity for its participants to acquaint themselves with the real values of Hungarian Orientalism, which are regarded as outstanding worldwide.
