The tenth workshop Arabic Codicology: the Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection was held from June 3–7, 2024. The gathering has attracted an increasing number of applicants each year. In 2024, 16 participants were selected from more than 50 applicants, including Eszter Csontos.
The workshop was chaired alternately by outstanding experts in Arabic codicological studies, namely Nuria de Castilla (École Pratique d’Hautes Études, Université PSL, Paris) and François Déroche (Collège de France, Université PSL, Paris). The five-day programme focused on practical activities that took place in the Royal Library of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, which houses two thousand Arabic-language codex collections. During the workshops, the theoretical methods learnt in the workshop were also put into practise.
The Royal Library was introduced by one of its librarians, Jaime Sepulcre. After the training session, our researcher also had the opportunity to further study the manuscript collection independently.
More photos as well as important news and other interesting topics related to the Arabic manuscript tradition can be found on the Facebook page of the workshop.
