FIELD OF RESEARCH

Fields of interest:  ethnology, cultural and historical antropology, Islam, social history of the Middle East, Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa, Swahili culture and language, Islam in Southeast Asia.

Main focuses of research:

1. social history of the Middle East (e.g. the social role of genealogies, patterns and santioning of non-normative behaviour, informal social interaction and networks);
2. Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa (esp. Swahili culture and society);
3. Islam in Southeast Asia (esp. syncretic and folk varieties of Islamic tradition and wider societal attitudes to these).

EDUCATION

1996–2001: Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest), doctoral studies at the Department of Arabic Studies, Faculty of Arts,
1998–1999: University of Oxford, one-year research scholarship in Arabic Studies at Balliol College,
1993–1994:  one-year course in Arabic at Institut Bourguiba des Langues Vivantes, Tunis
1989–1996:  Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest), BA and MA studies at the Department of Arabic Studies, Faculty of Arts, with additional courses in English philology and ethnography
