The sixth workshop Arabic Codicology: the Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection was held from June 17-21, 2019. The gathering has attracted an increasing number of applicants each year. The gradual increase in interest is indicated by the fact that in 2019, 16 participants were selected from nearly 100 applicants, including Zsuzsanna Csorba, István Lánczky and Mónika Schönléber.
The workshop was chaired alternately by outstanding experts in Arabic codicological studies, namely Nuria de Castilla (École Pratique d’Hautes Études, Université PSL, Paris) and François Déroche (Collège de France, Université PSL, Paris). The five-day programme focused on practical activities that took place in the Royal Library of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, which houses two thousand Arabic-language codex collections. During the workshops, the theoretical methods learnt in the workshop were also put into practise.
The Royal Library was introduced by its director, José Luis Del Valle Merino. After the training session, our researchers also had the opportunity to further study the manuscript collection independently.
